QUICK GUIDE TO MEANINGS

                     OVERVIEW OF THE SUITS (with the traditional tarot and elemental correspondences)

 PAINT BRUSHES (Wands & Fire) - Growth. activity, beginnings, and issues around creativity and jobs.

JARS (Cups & Water) - Emotions

SWORDS (Swords & Air) - The mental world

 STARS - (Pentacles & Earth) - Concerns such as the body, money, security, and career.

PAINT BRUSHES (traditional suit of Wands)

ACE - New Beginnings in growth or career.  Fire and zest.   For when and where - the timing is Spring and the direction is South.  Reversed:   Not a new beginning or a delay. Timing is later Spring and Direction is further South.

TWO – Balance. Having a vision and being able to manifest it on the earthly plane. The balance of passion and practicality.   Reversed: Being out of balance. Being an ungrounded dreamer... in essence, having the vision, but not the reality or being a working stiff (having nothing but the reality and production without the vision).

 THREE - Preparedness (for the marketplace or in general).  Also can indicate that the opportunities are there.    Reversed: Unprepared. Loss of, or not seeing, business opportunities.

FOUR - Celebration, fun, completion. Can be a card of marriage or some other celebration. Can be celebration as a result of an achievement.   Reversed: The celebration is yours, but delayed. The delay could be a result of obstacles to the achievement.

 FIVE - Struggle and competition. Jumping into a competitive field.   Reversed: End of the struggle. Letting go of the struggles as represented by the paint brushes in the hands of the battling figures. This can also represent the idea that you are so good at something that no competition cannot touch you, because you have gained mastery.

SIX – Victory and success.  Reversed: Red-tape. Victory is delayed.

SEVEN - Holding your own against adversity and pressure. You are able to do all that is thrown at you, but it is a trial.  Reversed: Being overwhelmed. Not holding your own.

EIGHT – Communication reaching its mark. Promotion. Expression being heard. Reversed: Delayed, bad, faulty, or mis-communication.

NINE – Productivity.  Reversed: Lack of productivity. Nine is a completion.

TEN – Ten is a completion and the beginning of the circle – the cycle goes from 9 and back to 1 (which is the value of 10 in numerology).  This represents carrying all the burdens and responsibilities of something (job, life, a relationship, etc.) Can feel like martyrdom, oppression, or strife.  Reversed: Letting go of burdens. You can see from the card, the burdens fall out of the person’s arms if turned upside down.

 PAGE -  Pages are change.  In this case, it is change of job or career. Can also refer to moving or whatever would be a growth-fostering change.  As a secondary meaning, the Page can be a young person (or one who seems youthful or even immature) who has the qualities of a fire sign.  Reversed: Not making a growth- or work-oriented change. If it refers to a person, it is someone with a negative fiery influence.

KNIGHT – Knights are helpers. This can signify you or a fiery helper (friend or partner in love or career). The card can represent the fiery, career-oriented side of you or someone else  (a fire sign or someone with strong fire in their chart). The Knight can help in your career, be a career-oriented person, or help you grown. Right-side-up they are helping you.  Reversed: You or a dynamic person are standing in the way of something and may not be acting in your best interest.

QUEEN -  A fiery, dynamic woman (or man) who has energy, vigor, strength, confidence, and power. She could represent you or another in business or growth (e.g., a boss or fiery lover).   Reversed: This person's dynamic power is used against you.

KING -  A dynamic, career-oriented man (or woman). Can be genteel, country gentleman. Reversed: This power is posed against you.

JARS (traditional suit of Cups)

ACE – New beginning in emotion or love.  Timing is Summer and direction is West. Reversed is a delay or stall in emotion or love.  The timing is later Summer and the direction is further West.

TWO – Emotional union in business or love. Reversed: Separation or not having an emotional union.

THREE – Fun, sensual pleasures. Reversed: Not having fun. Overworking. You need to go out and have some fun! Alternatively, it could refer to having too much fun (overindulgence in food, drink, etc.) The other cards around this one will tell the story in a layout spread.

FOUR – Dissatisfaction, with hope.  Reversed: Dissatisfaction without the sense of hope.

FIVE – Often referred to as “The Card of Addiction”. Can refer to any bad or destructive habit. It also is the experience of emphasizing grieving and depression. Reversed: This can be hard to interpret. Like the element of water, its meaning can flow. It can either be a bettering or a worsening. It can be releasing and getting over loss or getting sober. Alternatively, the loss, grieving, and depression could be getting worse. It has to be examined in context.

SIX – Affection, childhood-purity, friendship, and found memories.  Reversed: Bad memories and lack of affection.

SEVEN – Having a vision. Clarity. Even can be associated with an industry about vision, such as film or ophthalmology.   Reversed: Lack of clarity.

EIGHT – Walking away from something you have built up as emotionally important to a higher plane. Reversed: Hesitating or not walking away. It is advisable to examine and resolve within yourself why you or someone else is not walking away.

NINE – “The Wish Card”. Your wish comes true! Reversed: Your wish is granted, but not the way you envision it… or it is delayed.

TEN – Happiness and fulfillment. Emotional union and completion. Can be marriage and family. Reversed: Dissolution or not a formation of a union.

PAGE – Change of emotion or arrival of a new flirtation. Can be a young or immature person who has Water sign qualities. Reversed: No new love now. Or, change of emotion for the worse.

KNIGHT – Could signify you or another person who helps you emotionally in love or career. It can represent the emotional, poetic side of you or someone else (a water sign, someone with water in their chart, or just an emotional person). Reversed: You or an emotional person is standing in the way.

QUEEN – An emotionally sound, poetic, insightful, sensitive, and spiritual woman (or man). She is aware of interior processes and the unconscious. She could represent you or another in emotional situations or love. Reversed: This tool of emotion is against you in emotionally destructive ways.

KING – The same qualities of the Queen of Jars. Could be a man or woman. Also aware of the interior world and unconscious. Reversed:  The King uses his (or her) tool of emotion against you in cruel or in other emotionally destructive ways.

SWORDS

ACE – Mental new beginnings. Strong, structured, and powerful new beginnings.  Timing is Autumn and direction is East. Reversed: Not a new beginning or mental stagnation. Timing is later Autumn and the direction is further East.

TWO – Release from pain. Weighing the options, objectively. Reversed: Not releasing the pain. Swords stuck in the ground.

THREE – Separation – emotional as well as mental.  Reversed: Not separating.

FOUR – Repose after activity.  Reversed: Activity after repose.

FIVE – Compromise. Losing as much as you gain.  Reversed: The end of (and victory over) compromise.

SIX – Journey away from pain – like the Two of Swords – but with help (of a fiend, therapist, doctor, lawyer, relative, etc.) Could also be a journey over water.  Reversed: Not leaving pain and/or refusing help.

SEVEN – Moving on. Taking your mental property and leaving. Moving on from something (an apartment, job, lover) or just moving to a new phase of life. Reversed: Not moving on.

EIGHT – Mental bondage.  Reversed: Release from mental bondage.

NINE – Worrying and agonizing.  Reversed: End of the worry.

TEN – Self-doubt, self-criticism, and even self-hatred. Knives in your back from either your own hand or external forces. Has to be read in context.  Reversed: The knives fall out of your back.

PAGE – Change of mind for the better. Can be a young or immature person who has the qualities of an Air sign.  Reversed: Confusion, lack of clarity, or change of mind for the worse.

KNIGHT – Could signify you or another person who helps you mentally.  The card can represent the strong, forceful side of you or someone else. This could be a person who is an Air sign, has strong water in their chart, or interacts with you mentally. Reversed: The sword is double-edged and can be used to save or kill. Therefore, this Knight can hurt, maim, or kill you mentally…  or at least block your way.

QUEEN – An intellectual, strong, forceful, powerful, and just woman (or man) who could represent you or another in mental activities and communication.  The person could either be an Air sign or have strong Air sign qualities.  Reversed: The intellect and strictness of this person can be a harsh tool.

KING – An intellectual, strong, forceful, and just man (or woman).  He is forthright and powerful. Reversed:  His (or her) tool of power is a sword and can be used to hurt or mentally kill.

STARS (traditional suit of Pentacles)

ACE – New beginnings in things of a worldly nature, such as money, business, security, physicality, health, and fertility (both babies and creative projects).  The timing is Winter and direction is North. Reversed: Not a new beginning in the realm of worldly things. The timing is later Winter and the direction is further North.

TWO – Juggling something – two people, money and bills, money and work, a relationship and work, your parents and independence – two or something.  Reversed:  The end of the juggling. The money you are waiting for comings in you have decided on one girlfriend, etc.

THREE – Apprenticeship. Having gotten to the first plateau of achievement (in career, love, etc), you have built a foundation. Reversed: Not having built a foundation. Not heading toward your career.

FOUR – Holding on. Can be possessiveness in a relationship or holding onto your money. It is not necessarily miserliness; sometimes we just don’t have enough money. So, this can signal that it is a time to hold on, instead of spend. Reversed: Letting go (of money, relationships, etc.)

FIVE – Interpersonal arguments, disagreements, and struggles. The difficulties can be solved, but for some reason, the struggle is continued. Reversed: Releasing of interpersonal problems. A new healthy way to interact.

SIX – Generosity. This can describe a person or their actions. It can also refer to money or a promotion coming your way.  Reversed: Lack of generosity.

SEVEN – Waiting. Reverse: The end of the waiting.

EIGHT – Mastery through hard work. You have reached a high level in your career or an important goal. Good use of your skills. Reversed: Misuse of your skills. Not heading toward your career goals. Maybe you are in a job that is not your final goal.

NINE – Autonomy and strength within. Centered with a strong sense of self and power. Helathy independence. Can do it all by yourself. It’s a good feeling! Having it all! Reversed: Issues of independence and dependence arise. Struggling to hold onto oneself. Lack of autonomy.

TEN – A secure household. Security can come from many sources, such as money, love, or being surrounded by an extended loving family. Reversed: Not having security or a feeling of family. Money troubles.

PAGE – Change of money or health for the better. Can be a young or immature person who has the qualities of an Earth sign. Reversed: Change of money or health for the worse.

KINGHT – Could signify you or another person who helps you in terms of security, material goods, or support.  The card can represent the centered side of you or someone else. This could be a person who is an Earth sign, has strong Earth in their chart, or is a grounding influence. They can be counted upon. Reversed: This could be you or another person who undermines your security. It could also represent you or another person who is having financial difficulties or imbalance in their lives.

QUEEN – This is the Earth Mother. This sophisticated woman (or man) could represent you or another in the ways of the world (money, security, fertility, creation, or business). The person represented could either be an Earth sign or have strong Earth sign qualities. Reversed: She (or he) uses the tools of the world against you. This could be you or another.

KING – This is Earth Father. He is a man (or woman) who knows the world. He can bolster your security, financially or in some other way. He can be an Earth sign or have strong Earth sign qualities. The King could be you or someone else who is solid and acts in your behalf. Reversed: He could be boring, unreliable, and maybe even downright irresponsible.

THE MAJOR ARCANA (or the Fools Journey)

0 – THE FOOL – Being fearless enough to begin the adventure. May seem or be risky. What seems like foolishness is the bravery to take a risk which is the beginning of the adventure of living.  Reversed: Fear to live, take a risk, take the step into a good live-giving adventure. Bad use of skills and out of balance.

I – THE MAGICIAN – Having all the skills (all the elements and tools are on the table), good use of the skills, balance of the spiritual and the worldly.  Reversed: Emphasis on either spiritual matters or earthly matters – out of balance. Bad use of skills.

II – THE HIGH PRIESTESS – Mysteries revealed.  She is all religions and duality (the fertile virgin, who has the duality of all knowledge in both the earth and spiritual realm).  Reversed:   Mysteries not revealed (either not yet or never).

III – THE EMPRESS – Creation and fertility (either literally such as in a baby, or figuratively as in the birth or a book, project, or creative endeavor). This cards also signifies the timing of 9 months and Feminity. Reversed: Lack of fertility, barrenness,  and timing of one year (a delayed birth).

IV – THE EMPEROR – Self-mastery and control. The male, active, “doing” side of us.  Reversed: Lack of control and mastery.

V – THE HIEROPHANT – The orthodox way.  Reversed: The avant garde and unconventional approach.

VI – THE LOVERS – Choice. Reversed: Lack of choice, trapped, or the choice is so clear, the decision is made.

VII – THE CHARIOT – You are on the right path and in the right direction. Reversed:  Not following your highest path.

VIII – STRENGTH – Strength and balance.  Reversed: Lack of Strength and falling subject to your passions.

IX – THE HERMIT – Truth, light, and wisdom. Reversed: Being in darkness without wisdom.

X – THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE – Good luck. Reversed: Lack of luck, but the wheel is always turning and it will revolve around again to bring good things.

XI – JUSTICE – Justice and fairness.  Reversed: Injustice.

XII - THE HANGED MAN – Meeting your fate and Karma. Whatever is the issue is a life decision that you are meeting and the results are meant to be and positive, even if that is not clear initially. Reversed: Resisting your good fate.

XIII – DEATH – Rebirth and new beginnings. Reversed: Stagnation and putrification.

XIV – TEMPERANCE – moderation. Reversed: Lack of moderation and balance.

XV – THE DEVIL – Bondage to earthly things, such as money, lust, a job title, a relationship of convenience or for financial reasons, etc. The chains are loose and can be removed, but the figures choose to stay bound. Reversed: The chains fall off. Freedom. Moving into the spiritual realm.

XVI – THE TOWER – Leveling something that you have built up as important which needs to be eliminated.  The experience is painful, but less painful than if you put off the transition. Reversed: Putting off the transition of letting go of something you have built up as important. Letting a faulty structure stand, which will be more devastating in its destruction once it naturally falls, than if you faced what you need to do.

XVII – THE STAR – Inspiration, renewal, sparks of universal creation.  Can mean attention, promotion, or literal stardom as well. Reversed:  Lack of inspiration… a star in darkness.

XVIII – THE MOON – Evolution to higher plane. Mysteries revealed. Reversed: Lack of evolution. Staying in the darkness. Lack of clarity and secrets like a vast ocean at night with a moonless sky.

XIX – THE SUN – Happiness and joy.  Reversed: Sadness.

XX – JUDGMENT – Making a judgment you know you should make. Reversed: Not making a judgment you know you should make.

XXI – THE WORLD – Everything. The sense of the one and the all. All success, blessings and luck. Reversed: The World is yours; it is just delayed.
